This is Pinterest, this is "my pinterest"
I'm not using it to promote a site "yet" but I'm sure it's only a matter of time before people figure it out.
I could see how it' would be useful on an image site, or baking site or HOW TO site.

    What are your thoughts?
Do you have a profile, are you using it for your sites at all?

*it may be invite only, let me know if you want an invite via facebook*

I tried advertising my site with Flickr, and it has never helped. And I don't think this will work, either.

If your site's in one of the niches that Pinterest is great for (most of its demographic is female, so things related to fashion, baking, etc. are fairly viral there), then I'd recommend it, but for sites like this, I doubt you'd gain much out of it. It's something I've considered looking into since music is something that would likely gain some traction (I've seen lyric pins from those who have their Pinterest connected to Facebook, for example), but I haven't had the time to do so yet.

Okay this is what I'm talking about and I think it could help promote your site if it "fits"

There are several things to consider when trying to advertise your site on Pinterest or other image sites and I'm not going to go into them ATM but hopefully this will get my point across.

I've just started playing with the site, seeing what was on it and what I could do.
I made a few boards, here in one on Gemstones.
You can see direct links to the sites that host the images.
These are generally DEEP Links to your blogs or forums.
Okay so that's cool, getting your images out there. Check this one out, there are 18 "repins" which means they were posted on 18 other "boards". (These are DOFOLLOW Links BTW..)

I'm still exploring Pinterest but I see several categories..

I think the site is still very early in it's development, it's off to a strong run so far.
Here is a thread at xenforo on adding a pin to a xenforo forum.

One thing to note.. Pinterest isn't an image only site now, they allow video submissions as well.

So I've been playing around with pinterest the last 18 hours or so and I'm starting to get a few ideas on generating traffic to a website.
I found this little bot that will go through and like a bunch of of images and post on the site.. a BUNCH... well when I use to see someone liked my picture, I'd go check their stuff out and maybe like or repin something... So I liked about 9,000 images and stories..lol
Here is a screenshot right before I started running the program.
    pinterest.png
and I'd get a few likes and and repins from my friends stuff, and I still do
Here are my stats about 20 hours later
    pinterest2.png

But the real thing to look at are the repins
I'll try to get a screenshot
    pinterest4.png

Here are the gmails that I could fit in one screenshot,, all likes, follows and repins

    pinterest3.png

My girlfriend is really into baking and she has a few recipes posted on her blog, she linked them up to pinterest and doubled her weekly traffic.

I just made a few post on our affiliate blog I've been playing with. Added a few funny pictures and linked them to pinterest.
I see this post already has 30 different links back to it.
    http://pinterest.com/pin/280912095477239109/

It looks like this page will show all images or post from the affiliate blog that have 2 or more pins (repins)

Don't mistake images, they can be a powerful tool

PS.. I only ran the program I found last night for about 2 hours off and on.. I reached the "like" limit pretty quick.

I don't really see how that helps your site legitimately grow, though... Sure, you get backlinks and whatnot, but won't that just increase your bounce rate when no one joins the site after realizing it has nothing to do with Céline Dion humor? lol

    1. I like backlinks :)
    2. If this was a recipe or a How To post, you'll get more visitors that want to come in and read the whole story. (or at least more then a few funny pictures)

There are lots of categories on pinterest, even stuff guys like!..lol

I was just running a quick little test with the above screenshots, this all happen in less then 24 hours and now the image I linked to at the end there had been repined 43 times and it was just posted 2 hours ago.
Also I don't know if pinterest chaches the images or not, but you won't get many visitors on "funny images" like what I've done. You need to give them a reason to click through and read more about your post.

I think pinterest is going to be getting big, there are people worried about copyrighting images, but I think they'll work that all out.

You can drive all the traffic you want to your site doing any number of things from any social network site. They are good for that. If you want to see your online user list spin like a top then it's all good. However if you ever figure out how to convert this traffic into active users you'll be an instant millionaire.

I would rather have one backlink on a site in my niche that has high rankings for my keywords then to have thousands of backlinks on social network sites. When I was an MS MVP I had a link on Microsoft's MVP site and it was featured as a must visit for Visual Basic programmers. Now that brought real traffic and along with real users. I'd give anything to get that kind of link again.

Welp, I jumped onto the bandwagon. http://pinterest.com/voiceradio/ I figure I can use it for album/single cover art, video stills, art made with music lyrics, and artist photos. We'll see how it goes.

I have absolutely no luck whatsoever in logging in. I've been sent invites, I have signed up, and every time I go to log in, the site doesn't recognize my email or my password. I've reported it to their site, and the only reply I got back was that it was happening to others as well and that it "may" be a software problem.

No thanks, if I can't get a well informed reply, not worth my time.

However, if you have success with it, all the power to you!

    Questions for Mr Brandon :)

So, what part of this is more valuable to you? The likes or the repining? And when you repin does it show on your facebook? Also, what is the like limit? I am prolly going to work on this today. If I get it working ill slap the site link on it and maybe the logo and release here :)

It's better to get your stuff repinned.
I'm not sure what the limit is, I know that first night I went from 200 likes to 10,000 in a few hours
since then I haven't been able to like as many post, maybe 100 at a time every other day.

So then its better to repin something? Can you repin your own stuff? Or does someone else have to do it? Also, forgot to ask does the likes show on your facebook? I hate cluttering my facebook up

oh.. Well it's better to have YOUR stuff repinned.

Okay.. this is what I've observed.

    • When You post something or "pin" it, your pin will show up on the "pinners your follow" page of those who are following you. (it'll also show up on search terms if you have those words in your description) (the more "repins" of your post, the more often it'll show up for search)
    • If you "like" something, it'll show up on your followers side bar. (like fb sidebar, _stalking_ seeing ppl's likes)
    • Really what your after is getting as many followers and repins as possible.
    • Mass likeing is a lot less annoying then mass pinning to your followers
    • There are apps to mass follow, I could see this as helpful to building your followers.
I guess a small app that would mass like based on search term would be nice
Allowing a limit of likes, say 100, 200 or 500 likes in one session.. or empty field to enter a custom number would be good.
Allowing mass following based on search term would be nice, again with a set amount or enter our own amount.

The Searching by keyword is a key part, there are apps that will blindly just click everything on your main page and move on, if you could search for say all "food" post then like, or repin or friend them, you'll have higher chances of them friending you back or repinning your stuff.

As users sign up and make "boards" they will look like this.
    http://pinterest.com/brandonsheley/gems/
This is where your repins/likes and links will be shown to the public
You can scroll down and see some of them have been repinned, then if you were to go to those users boards you'll see the same image and link.
