I've had this happen, the forum owner sold the forum, and started a new one. The members went to his new one and the old forum owner lost out bigtime. Bit odd when it happens but I guess they're just good friends with the old admin.

    +1

If you've done your job right as an administrator, you can step away, have someone else take over the technical aspects of maintaining the board, and maintain a majority the members.

I'd be pissed if I bought that old forum. I wouldn't buy a forum unless the owner agreed to stay out of the niche for at least a year.

Only time I've seen it happen was here. I never left just went offline for a period of time. I don't have problem if this ever occurred to my forum. People have a liking of their own to the forum. Perhaps their BF was the owner and it seems totally "unloyal" to stay while they go. All I'm saying is I see both sides of the story and I'm find with each decision.

Ya, that's some foul stuff man. I'd step my game up and show that owner who I'm about. How do you think he promoted to get all his members back? he more than likely mass mailed them, or had a lot of members on instant messengers. Was his new forum in the same type of niche of the other one?

I've never experienced this, but a lot of people are not up for change.

This happened to me. I acquired Chat Source and it went inactive, it didn't help that fact I went sort of inactive as well. Its a general forum and general forums are just hard to manage and be active on at times :p However, I have some further plans to make it something more than a general forum while still being an actual general forums :) Hopefully it works out!

How long did it take for it to become inactive though? If users are going to leave they usually do with or without notice, but some usually stick around regardless because of the "loyalty" factor.
