I have a donation link in my footer, out of the way and unnoticeable. I have yet to make some noise about it because I'm not done with setting up the VIP member group, which is what potential donors will be transferred to.

Even then, once it's set up, I'm not going to make a big deal about it, I hate seeing sites which are constantly trying to get you to upgrade to VIP or something. I'm just going to say that we appreciate your donation and as a method of saying thanks we're promoting you to VIP.

Ah yes, tell me about it. It gets very annoying when they constantly try to get you to donate or upgrade to VIP. Makes them look very cheap, that's one reason I didn't feel the need to have a donation button/page/link.

Yeah, my thoughts are that if you care about the site, you'll donate, and look for a place to donate, and not have to be pestered or bullied into it like some sites. One forum I joined, I made an intro thread, and the admin said "Hi, welcome, make sure to buy VIP soon!" Needless to say I never went back.

I agree, I've had a similar experience too and it can get annoying.. If someone wants to help out they will donate but they don't need to constantly be "reminded".

Well yea the button might seem bad but a full page/thread will do justice. Giving something back to the donator will increase the chance. Just don't let it be annoying on the end.

We have a donations bar on our community, but we don't ask any of my members to donate - they do it to help us continue on. I, of course, also help out with the bills so its not just the users donating and paying for things. It's a great feature to have on your community because you never know, your members might want to donate and help out.

I leave a link to donate in my signature for anyone who is willing to do so. I get donations from time to time which makes me happy. I think I got like 75 bux this month in donations, but most of that was because I won someone 500 dollars worth of stuff for their kid with a program I made to vote for his video. It is always nice to get a donation, but I believe asking for a donation would be wrong. Specially if your site has a subscription package. But, lucky enough the site makes well over what it costs per month for the hosting and with subscriptions there is never any real need for money.

I've merged the two donations threads.
I have a donate button on my blog but that's just so I can easier send money to paypal if I need..lol
I don't care for donation buttons on forums but I like the sig idea, I've also seen this work for the users too.Where they can have a donate link in their sig for their own personal paypal accounts, this may be something we allow here.

Yeah people have asked me before if this was ok and I see no problem with people adding own personal donation links in their sig.. I mean if they do something helpful and someone wants to donate , then I am all for them getting paid. Plus, I think its a nice bonus for any site when the members know that they can get something back. Like I myself have personaly donated to members a couple dollars for make a really good post that helps people..

I do the same thing but I send the money to one of my buddies - since he pays the hosting bill for me, and handles all the donations from the site. I'd do it myself but for some odd reason Paypal put a lock on my family's paypal account, so I wouldn't dare get money sent to it.
