Has it ever happened to you or anyone else that you know that were paranoid about getting hacked?

I remember long ago when after being hacked for the second time on one of my old forums I was always worried if I would get hacked again. It can be very stressful and take a toll on you. Lot of people stop running forums after getting hacked because after all of that hard put in, its all gone and they end up losing interest and don't want to get hacked, and go through it all over again.

I took a long break after getting hacked for the second time. This is about 3 years ago.. Getting hacked is not a easy thing and especially if you don't keep backups. Always make backups.

Know the possibilities but don't fear them.
Also, don't make backups, have them made for you,
    http://sourceforge.net/projects/automysqlbackup/

I backup MySQL daily, and the entire server monthly and have them stored in 3 different locations. Super safe.

I've been hacked, but I don't fear them anymore as daily backups are in place, and I'm on a more secured host, so there isn't reason to worry, or be paranoid about the situation. Being hacked sucks though.

Never been hacked, nor do I plan on being hacked. I have my friends test common exploits when I make a new blog/forum. Yay for having hacker friends :D ai.imgur.com_gWlkh.png

Same here. Chatting Time was hacked twice in 2010, once in January and another in March. The biggest lesson we learned is to constantly make backups. I'm no longer as worried about being hacked as I was last summer, thanks to a bit of help from anti-spam mods, but all the same, the biggest thing is to never let your guard down, because you can have the strictest security measures in place possible, but you'll always have a few low-life ding dongs who know how to get past the most serious measures.

As for being paranoid about being hacked, as I've stated above I no longer worry about it as much, because we have some anti-spam mods in place and some dedicated staff members as well. I have seen people get all worked up when they THINK they are going to get hacked. My advice: If you're going to get that worked up over it, add some security measures if you don't already have anything in place, but don't overdo it to the point where it makes it impossible for anybody to enjoy his or her time on your site. I'd like to try for around the clock staffing again as well. We did this on an older forum I had, and I really liked it because even if I couldn't be on, there was always someone from a different time zone either in the US or the world in general who could, and this helped bring security to the forum 24/7. I'd like to try my luck with that again, because it was awesome last time, knowing that someone other than my main crew who always had my back when I didn't have time to be on and patrolling the forum.

I dont either, I always keep backups but some people are in constant fear of getting hacked. And the main reason for getting hacked most of the time is for using an insecure host.

I got hacked once and thats when I gave someone my password so you cannot classify that as hacking really, I would recommend you backup sql everyday like me :} anything can be hacked now'a'days so worrying should not be happening in the first place, also make sure your CMS or Forum Software do not contain anything which will allow members to be leaked e.g. SQL Injection or simple Revert.

Ya, and then you can off-site backups set up as well. Just incase you don't have time to make a backup.

Yea everyone should always be careful with the mods they have installed as they can contain exploits, that is another reason I often see forums/blogs getting hacked.

See I've had a few sites hacked before and I must say it's the most frustrating moment that I have experienced... What I've learned is to keep everything separate, updated, and secured as possible including randomly generate the passwords. The only opinion left is to have everything backed up. It will always be a learning experience....lol

Well, how did you sites get hacked before? Was it because of the host, or were your passwords too easy, then?

It was always due to an outdated script or bad coding. Only once did my site get hacked to due a weak password; since that day I've always generated my password.

So, it was an SQL injection that got you hacked to begin with? Were you able to get everything back when you got hacked due to a weak password, or did you have to restart from scratch?

You can say it was an SQL injection. I wasn't really never able to recovery from the lost since my backups was about a week old so you know how that goes...

I've been hacked but that was 6 or 7 years ago when I first started with forums. Keep your scripts updated and take measures to secure your site and you should be good to go. Also always have daily backups made automatically ;)

I just recovered from a hack. I can say that for a newbie from owner this has been an incredibly stressful situation. I sure did learn a lot, most importantly the value of having your own back ups. I hadn't really worried much before, knowing that my host was doing daily backups for me. But guess what, the back ups weren't being done at the time of the hack, so I had nothing to fall back on. Lesson learned!

How did they hack you though? What software are you using? Did they bust your cpanel information or something?

I guess it's the burden we all have to bear being a part of the internet. Many good people, a small percentage of scum. I've been hacked and, I agree, it sucks. Especially because your anger is undirected. Faceless vandals.

I've been hacked a couple of times in the past. It's not fun. The last hack wasn't severe and we were able to recover all the data without any backups. However, since then I converted off vB to IPB and i make a daily backup at either 12am or 1am every morning before going to sleep. :)
