What's your thoughts on over competitive forums, where they take competition too far? An example would be where the forum's owner is too over competitive where he or she feels the need to ban their competitors from their forum?

I have had this happen to me, and seen it happen to others where they have done nothing wrong but they got banned just for owning a competing forum. Running a forum shouldn't be about competition, but about providing a forum for other people to enjoy.

I don't allow competitor forums to be advertised, but I don't have a problem with having the owners being apart of my community, am I wrong here?

I agree with you. Allowing other admin forum owners to come on and chat is a good idea. Some may look up to you. And I do agree with you on the advertising part.

The admins who ban their competition are the dumb ones. :P

I agree, it just makes them look sorry on their end. And this one forum that I am referring to is the largest Admin Forum, and I don't see how the owner can consider AdminBB and other Admin Forums competition in the first place.

I got banned from another community in my niche for the sole fact - they didn't wanted me though, and just wanted to bash me. I saw a few quality threads there and I just wanted to reply to help them out, but instead, I kept my mouth shut and focused on my community.

Forum owners should be friends, and not over competitive really, why? Similar ideas go a long way, and sometimes each forum has different topics to discuss.

I definitely agree to that, and I wanted to do the same on the forum I was banned on.. I didn't do anything wrong but I was banned without any warning just for the fact I was a competitor.

I've never been banned from a competitor gaming forum as of yet but I wouldn't be surprised if it happened in the future. I am usually a pretty friendly person even when it comes to competitors. I like to join other gaming communities and actually have 10 communities bookmarked in Firefox that I participate in or lurk around from time to time. If you're a good owner and know what you are doing you shouldn't feel threatened by another forum. I don't think it should be that serious to begin with. :P

Your right, forum owners should be friends, I see too many tensions between other similar forums these days...

I guess that's when you see how badly that particular forum is actually being run...

I do remember being banned from one site because I apparently took some code from that site which were similar, but not exactly the same. Not to mention there was no copyrights in the script either...

unfortunately some people like to report anything and everything as they think they are helping you, when in fact they could be delaying the action that may be needed to be taken, etc.

Some people just hate the fact that they're competitor is apart of their forum. Maybe they think they'd steal ideas or something, but in actuality sometimes we just want to make friends on competitor forums.

People theses days only start forums to be in competition with other forums, it just makes a stressful job harder.

Yea. If I ever decided to make a forum again, it would be for fun, and not as a competition against others within the genre as banning competitors is basically a way of pointing out that your jealous of them, and so will be just driving traffic away...

Correct and seems a lot of sites are banning similar forums, end of the day you are making a rod for your own back and your forum as well.

I don't mind it when other general discussion forum owners come on to CT. Sure, some people might find that awkward and not even reasonable, since I'm running a so-called "rival" site, but really, I've never been in this for competition at all. It agravates me when I request a review and I hear, "if you really want to stand out from the competition, this is what you need to do to stand out". I hate that because I'm not in this for competition. This is just something for me to do for fun, and this is also why I don't request reviews anymore. Everyone expects you to come out on top, when I'm just grateful to be getting any activity at all.

People who go to extreme steps to shield their members from finding similar forums are just making themselves look stupid.

I know right, and kind of makes them wonder that the other forum is better as the owner is trying to stop people from visiting it.

I wonder if this is the reason that a certain host stopped supporting them a while back
