I would like to start (or maybe revive) a forum based around my local city. We're not huge, but I think it's got potential. But I wanted to ask if people had any examples of successful local communities that were based up on a city/region/state etc?

And what were the particular "must have" categories and forums to be included in such a site?

You can check out mine I just started one. Michigander Today, 5 out of the 25 members are from Michigan the rest are from various places but they do talk about whats going on in Michigan. I think it would be really hard to get every member from Michigan.

You can check my categories for ideas, I have different categories for various subjects about Michigan. And I have a general discussion section to talk about other stuff. I hope this info helps you in your quest.

If it has potential, and you have faith in it then go for it. I wouldnt know about the must have categories but maybe they should be important sections that relate to the region your forum is about. Here is a forum I found my doing a quick google search http://www.discussny.com/, that may help you out by thinking of the section that you might need.
