Do you look for staff on other forums, or you look for staff within your community? I do both, if I see a member with potential I may ask them to join the staff, or I may advertise on other forums to find people who are interested.

    I always promote from within.

Do you mean look for staff within your forum?

    Yeah.

Its the only method that makes sense on a community. Hiring a "stranger" who registers on your forum and is instantly made a moderator may seem odd to members. Promoting a respected and loyal member on a forum is the logical way to do it.

I agree, but in some cases that stranger might do a great job, and will be liked by the community. No one stays a stranger for too long on a forum unless its a very BIG one.

Most people who apply for staff positions on outside forums like promotion forums, are just seeking power or a feeling of importance.
I'd rather promote member who has already been on the forum, is familiar with everyone and is there because they genuinely like being there.

I see your reasoning, but that is not always true. You never know.

Well nothing is always the case when people are giving examples, there is always exceptions to any rule.
Ive hired people from "Now hiring" threads in the past (on other forums) and they never work out. Its always the ones who were promoted from within who lasted.

Well I have hired people from within my community and it hasn't gone to well, so it really depends on luck.

Yes, it all depends on Luck, some staff have done well and have been found internally, yet others who I've found elsewhere through advertisements have done 10 times better than staff found within the community...

Fully agreed with this. I'm much more comfortable promoting someone who's already a good member of the forum, instead of someone who has staff experience elsewhere, where the rules (and the methods of enforcement) are likely different.

Yea it really is luck, because it really doesn't matter where you get your staff from, either from within your community or outside it, depending on your luck they will either be great or not do their jobs, but people have their own preferences when hiring someone and I respect that.

Yea, I know. I can't say that I'm looking for certain staff, or have a certain preference but some things are obviously an advantage

I'll find them within my forum. If a member looks promising, and seems to be liked by the community, I'll send them a PM asking them if they want a position. If they say yes, promoted. However, for their first two weeks, I'll keep a close eye on them.

I hardly ever rely on promotion forums to find staff. As others have said, some people are just power hungry. Though some are promising. I usually don't want to take my chances.

Yea its best to stay on the safe side but as I have mentioned it really doesn't matter, you can hire someone from your community who will do an awful job compared to someone who is not apart of it and does a great job.. you never know.

Like wise, I'm having a battle trying to find staff and moderators for a site I run. I want to build a strong relationship with people before I bring them on board.

I agree guys, but where do you find them? Is it within your community? or externally on a promotion board for example?

That's the best way to do it, take an active member, and make them a moderator. You never know, you might develop a great moderator with the user. :)

Well, you've got to ask first. You never know, that great staff choice might not want to be a mod. You always have to check.
