Well, I can sense if someone is or not for some reason. But the way I usually do it is by,

    Behavior
Proper Speech, Puncuation and Spelling, how they act with other members, if they have been banned, (Because if someone gets banned once from my forum there is a 100% chance that they won't become a staff) and helpfulness.

    How do you judge yours?

Usually by active they are, and how much they contribute to the community, and such.

    Just a few things:
    How active they are.
    Friendliness.
    Grammar.

Activity, Patience/Attitude, Friendliness, Grammar and last but not means least, dedication.

I don't have time for people who can't be bothered to wait the mentioned 72 hours for a decision to be made or people who come up with excuses for not doing their jobs, etc.

My forum is still new, so it lacks the need for staff but here is what I would use to judge:

    1. Are they helpful?
    2. Have they been ban? If so, have they learned their lesson?
    3. Do they generally seem to know the rules?
    4. Are they kind to other members?
    5. Do they seem like they want to be part of the staff?

I agree with you se7en, nice things you point out. We all basically look for the same things in staff members, which is pretty hard to get nowadays.

Tell me about it. Very hard to get decent staff members.. its just not the same anymore like how it used to be.

When choosing staff for your forum, do you consider their spelling, grammar and whether they have been banned on a forum before? I find that if I hire someone with good English, that they look a lot more professional than someone with not-so-good English.

Those are some good questions - and most forum owners should follow these ones. How many people here actually interview a moderator or future staff member before allowing them onto their staff team?

Lack of warns and suspensions(if you can't follow rules then how will you be able to enforce them?)
