How much are you prepared to pay for hosting, if your site becomes so big that your needing to dish out 100's of dollars a month will you just close your site or try to earn money from it to pay or just pay from it out of wages etc. What is the maximum you will pay for hosting?

There is no budget for me running AdminBB, I will pay as much as I need to keep it running. Right now hosting is a problem as we are on a shared server but if we need to move to VPS, I have no problem and I will move. The maximum I would pay for hosting would be $80 a month, but it hasnt even got to that point yet.

$80 a month is very steep, no way could I afford to keep that up, I couldn't even pay for one month. I currently use a heavily discounted 1$ a year hosting package which is normally 3$/month but I was staff at the hosting site it was on and I often talked to the owner so I got a large discount and when they closed and sold to a bigger hosting company they let us keep our hosting on the same price as what we bought it for. Unless I start earning from my sites I will never be able to afford anything over 12$/year.

How well has the hosting been so far? It might not start giving you problems unless your site grows.

On a VPS, you wouldn't have to pay $80/month, only like $35 and you'd do just fine on it. The point is to take to your host, about an update, before going through with it on your own.

So hosting hasn't been any trouble recently though I only have 20 mysql databases and I use a lot as my site is a hybrid and network of sites so we run a lot of software. I just hope:
    A) I can afford VPS
    B) My site is so active I need it.

Those two combined would be great.

I am willing to pay a higher price if my forum would be at a point where it is earning enough and growing at a good pace. We have to be prepared for growth and possible expansion.

Same here, I dont have a problem with paying. But I wont pay for something unless I really need it, and we dont need a VPS right now, but when we do I will get it.

It really depends on the host and what I thought it was worth. Some hosting providers I would be willing to pay for more than others. And others, I would pay less even though they claim to offer more. It really depends.

Yea it does, but if its reliable and a well known host than I would be willing to pay more. I try not to use hosts which are new or not well known.

I currently have free hosting for Music Junkies, and have another free unlimited hosting account on Empire Hostings due to me helping the owner with a few things.

Lucky you, but I still rather pay though.. people have offered me unlimited free hosting for a permanent ad banner placement but I declined it. When you pay for something you get full control and you dont have to worry about anything happening to your account if you buy from a reputable host such as HawkHost which is what I use.

Well, I'm not real big on admining a site so I'm happy with what I have. It's always good to have a free hosting account lying around in case you want to use it in the future on something, but right now, I don't need to pay for hosting when I'm not going to be using it. :P

Is that sum for monthly or yearly payments for your VPS?

I'm currently paying $43/month for a VPS. If my community outgrows the VPS, then I'd upgrade to a dedicated server. I really don't have a maximum amount I'd pay for hosting because in order for my site to survive, hosting costs always need to be paid. my users also donate money to help us stay afloat so its not really a problem. I'd also assume that if your site is growing, you should always have some type of money available to upgrade when its ready. You don't want to run a slow forum full of lag do you?

I'm paying about 30$ a month for our own VPS through a friend, it would normally cost 45 or so.
If needed we would upgrade but only if needed.

I'm not sure to be honest anymore
It's with this host, the Elite package
    http://www.hostgrounds.com/

According to my server stats, my box has 8 gigs of RAM on it.
This is what I'm currently using for all my sites, not just this forum.

    Server load 0.35 (8 CPUs)
    Memory Used 11.55% (943,312 of 8,163,996)
    Swap Used 0% (12 of 4,208,988)
