The title says it all...If SMF did not switch to a NPO (Non Profit Organisation) last September, do you think it would have gone paid? If so...Why?, Or why not???

Im sure it never would. Considering people have been moving away from it already when its free, and if they went paid they'd loose everyone lol.

Probably, but then again, if Development picked up speed because of being paid software, they may have gained some credit back

No. If it didn't, Cathy would still be part of the team, and she single-handedly drove away a LOT of staff members at one time.

She was one of the highest in the positions (if I recall, she managed finance), but more importantly, she held the copyrights to the forums and owned the LLC.

Here's the letter signed by some of the guys who quit. I knew two of them.

    More explanations.

Should also be of note that Jeff Lewis previously owned the copyrights and such.

I don't really think any version of SMF would ever be worth money. Not when there is Xenforo and so many other very high quality forum software available already. I've used SMF free forum software, the newest version and like it well enough. I like the ease in which you can install the ad mod pack to display Google adsense and site ads. But, there is a woeful lack of high quality working forum themes/templates. Sure there are themes available, but when you install them on the forum, there is always some glitch or bug like the login box not showing up or the admin control link panel is missing. All those things should be present as they were on the default SMF template.

I like the SMF software well enough. But, would I pay? Not in a million years unless they were also including some VERY high end templates/themes to go along with the software and maybe then only if the price included installation on my website.
