So, I was recently on a shared server for two months with Hostpolar at $5/month and my community started to lag because our traffic and daily activity was on the rise, so I upgraded to a VPS - and my site is a lot more faster.

So, when did you upgrade from a shared server to a VPS?

You did the right thing, I pay for yearly hosting from hawkhost... have about 6 months left, and by then I plan to upgrade to VPS... Right now I feel its doing perfect on shared hosting, if continues to stay fast like it is I will just continue on shared hosting.

How much does it cost for yearly hosting for you? VPS is great because it keeps your community faster than a shared environment - depending on the amount of traffic you get.

For me its about $60, and then the domain payments which is like $15 along with whoisGaurd payments which has additional costs.

That's not so bad - it's actually quite cheap for yearly hosting.

Yea its in my budget. $35 yearly for VPS is not though.. hopefully my income from AdminBB will grow over time when we will really need to switch to VPS.

I would say once you get about 10k visits a day or if you're a forum about 50 concurrent users at one time. It really depends on how well optimized your site is and how things work (plugins will play a huge role in that as well).
