Twitter is a social networking site, but it can come in very handy as a tool to promote your site. You just have to use it properly and wisely. How many of you guys use Twitter for your site?

I've tried it, but I wasn't too fond of it, though. I prefer promotion forums and Facebook mostly.

All it has seemed to have done for me is attract a load of bots, not real people...

Same here. I did have some legit users following me, but 90% of these users were already a member of the forum, and they could just as easily have kept up with us through the Announcement section. Bit of a waste of time, to be honest.

    depends :/
if you post your link it it frequently it will help with some backlinks and you might be able to get some people to join if you do the random I follow you so you follow me thing

many people build twitter accounts with 50k + followers and sell advertising space
which can either get you loads of new members or just wasting your money

That's about all it does and what real people it does attract only reads what you posted on Twitter and they are gone.

Not only that, but as I said in my post, about 90% of the people who were following me were already members of the forum, and they could've just as well kept up with us through the announcement section. So for me, Twitter was pretty much deemed useless.

I used had a script which worked VIA wordpress, I got about 15 views within about 2 seconds thanks to it. Hard to maintain that traffic, especially when your host fails. D:

I have earned over 10$ from advertising my referral links on Twitter and when you have auto tweeters its so much easier.

I use Twitter to promote my forum. I have two Twitters, one being for the forum and another being a more personal one. I use the forum one to talk about news and topics etc., and use the personal one (which has more followers) to promote the forum account.

Could someone please tell me how to use it 'properly' and 'wisely' to get a forum's name out there?
It simply hasn't worked for me on my last forum which was a flop, and boy was I trying. Extensive hashtags and all. :(
I'm not saying it's not possible. I'm just saying, in my experience, it's been a bit of a waste of my time.
