Who was your first ever hosting company and what made you move from them to the second?

Our first host was Hostgator. What made us move from them was they closed our hosting down and said that we would need to optimise our site before they would allow us to release it to the public. They asked for our IP so we could gain access from our house only, we asked our new host for his IP and gave them that. He went in took the lot and shifted us over. We were happy with Hostgators support, I wouldnt say it was superb but it was fine.

I am sure others have had this with them, it is a shame they oversell that much they need to request this after a forum was only running 2 months.

My first was a German host called Strato. This was like in 1999 or something like that.
I left them because I moved to Scotland and wouldn't have had the time to keep the site up to date.

Their website is horrendous. Can't say that I'm surprised to hear about your experience with them.

I honestly don't remember who I chose as my first provider. I was with HostGator for a month or so, but that was short-lived (and certainly not who I went with first). I'm embarrassed to say that it may have been a web host known as Zeeblo... but I'm not entirely sure. Keep in mind, this was when I first created a website, which was years ago. I was with them for about a month and then I moved to a better (commercial) provider.

I don't think they're still up and running today.

No, it was quicker and free, it had less specs.

    Yahoo. Big mistake.

They still retain my old domain name, and that was quite a few years ago.

I've heard horrendous stories in regards to their service(s). Do they still offer 'unlimited' storage?

I don't know about that because when I had them it was something like 20 or 50MB...it was a while ago.

I've never used another hosting company but my first personal web page was on the Buffalo Freenet in the earlier 90's.

Hostgator. I switched because the phpbb forum with 10 users was always slow, and customer support was virtually nonexistent.

My first ever host was UUNet. I moved because there was finally some competition in the space. Nothing like paying a few hundred dollars a year for a couple megabytes of space and a few dozen megabytes of bandwidth in the 90s.

First free host for my website, forum, or first paid host for both? The first free host I ever used was AOL's webspace service a good three or so years back. It should be pretty obvious why I left that place... lack of features and possibilities. First free forum host was Invisionfree, I left that due to it not giving enough control over the forum in question and the fact it was damn well unprofessional having s1.invisionfree.com/[forum name]. I'm still using my first paid host.
