If your members logged onto your forum on their birthday, what kind of greetings would they get? Would it be automated from the forum software, or a personal "happy birthday" thread from a designated admin? Do your members do it, and if so do they offer birthday wishes only to the popular members or to everyone?

I send personalized birthday messages (both by e-mail and the private messaging system). :)

Members receive an e-mail on their birthday - just a quick greeting. When they log in, there is a notice displayed (vBulletin feature) wishing them a Happy Birthday.

Also, our members rarely miss a birthday (it's displayed on the bottom of the forum index) and whoever sees it will create a Happy Birthday thread full of huge smileys and good wishes. Here's a recent one.

That's an interesting concept, FMB. Maybe I'll do something similar.

It's pretty fun ^_____^ People feel good and they feel the community approves of them because of this and such. We are like a family, it's pretty nice to get a happy birthday from people you talk to almost every day. It's our own little family.

I like the concept of having a Birthdays section, too - I may consider adding one for Bird is the Word.

That's exactly what it's like on the Linnie Forum. It's such a nice feeling to have a tight-knit community. The members thoroughly enjoy it.

If your members are the ones handling the birthday greetings, what happens if they miss an unpopular or newer member? Do feelings get hurt?

We don't. We usually just greet EVERYONE. Some don't even know the user and we add[I've done this before]

"Happy B-Day! [Unknown User] I don't know you, but I wish you the best!!!"

I don't think feelings get hurt at all. I don't think we've missed any big birthdays (except my own - nobody noticed :p). If we have, we've never had anybody say that they feel bad that they didn't get wished a Happy Birthday.
