I used to ping all the time - especially late at night when a lot of new topics have been released, and other new content has been posted. Now, I see my forum show up on keywords that I track on Google - meaning, my forum's content shows up on certain Google alerts. So, I guess that's a good thing, right?

How about you though? Do you ping your forums a lot or not really?

I tend not to 'ping' search engines or anything, maybe I should try it in future.

Never once ever (nor have I ever had a sitemap or anything else along those lines).

The thing is... search engines spend billions of dollars in research/tech to spider your site as fast as they can. They want new and relevant results. Personally, I just trust that Google is good at their job. That being said, any new thread that is posted on our site seems to show up in Google results in less than 5 minutes.... without pinging or sitemaps or anything else. So it seems Google is just fine at their job. :)

I use feedburner. It does it for me. I'm not even sure what pinging is anymore but like I said... it does it for me lol.

Only ever done this once, most things seem to appear in search engines without it though

I've done this to my blog and other sites before. I don't see any real substance from doing this.

In fact, I think it hurts more than it tries to help.
