Fact: Choosing a name when you get an idea is extremely frustrating.

I have a frequent and very frustrating problem. I am constantly getting ideas and visions for a new forum and/or website in my head, but can never come up with a name for it. I can picture exactly what I want to do and how I plan for it to look and function. All that good stuff, but I'll spend ages with absolutely nothing because I can't conquer step one: the name and domain. Ugh! :killpc:

/rant and feel free to let it out with me if you are a victim as well.

As you know, I'm feeling the pain of this at the moment.

I think this is a common problem for many people. I'm a huge victim of this because I'm one of the least creative people in the world :p. I can often plan some very neat things, but the name always gets me.

I'm really interested in hearing how others conquer this...

I can usually come up with a name fairly easily. Not always, but usually.

The problem I have is when I do, the domain is taken. Then that just ticks me off to no end.

Oh, Peggy that has happened to me on multiple occasions. It's such a discouragement when you think of a good name and then are denied when looking into the domain.

I've been having trouble for a while thinking of a domain for an upcoming forum, but I finally got two in mind that aren't taken. The only person I've told is a friend, but if he takes them I'll pull out what little hair he had on his head in front of his wife.

This is the worst. I'm always left with the decision of if I should settle for .net or come up with a new name. I actually like when .net is also taken so I'm not tempted because I usually regret it.

I like .com's, they're more professional. It was said that .net's were professional, but the tides have changed.

I would never settle for a .net if the .com is taken.

I do prefer a .com domain name, but I honestly don't give a rat's behind - they're all accessible the same way, so it's not a big deal to me.

My design site is a .net. It's done very well. 2 years later the .com became available and I snatched it up, pointed it to the site too.

That said, if I really, really want that domain, I don't let the lack of a .com deter me if .net is available.

Usually when the .com I want is taken it's not a real site, just some waste-of-space ad site.

This was the case with my Linnie forum. The .com was just a parked domain, so I took the .net. Not too long ago, about a year after starting my forum up, the .com became the website of a person/business that sells Linnies - which is what my forum is about.

In this case, it wasn't a big deal. But if the .com was an established site, perhaps one that would be in direct competition of my site, I'd stay away from it. In fact, I might actually just buy the .net version and sit on it because they may want to buy it from me later on - and I can jack the price up.

    Bingo.

I had this awesome site name in plan, ok not. It was generic but it was good. I contacted the company with an offer for 50 dollars and they said 430 and it's mine. I told them to literally F Off since they're not using it for anything worthwhile and it's not like they even know how to set it up. So pissed.

And that's the method to my madness, here:
Although, I wouldn't be so idiotic to charge $430.
