I have been a GIMP user for at least over 3 years. And most of my graphics are made on GIMP, especially advertisement banners.

If you have no money and no other way of somehow obtaining either Photoshop, Photoshop Elements or Paint Shop Pro, then GIMP is your best free graphics engine.

EDIT: For the record, I meant no other legal way of obtaining them.

If you don't have money to spend! Go for GIMP. I used it back in High School, since it was free and used it till University. Then I got a deal on the adobe package, and got the adobe suite.

Oh that means if you can take advantage of student prices... DO SO!! and save yourself some good $$

GIMP is truly awesome!! I've been using it for ages. The user interface is similar to old Photoshop versions. It comes with a very good help system that gets you started more easily. Once you get the hang of it, it's pretty ease to use.

What you can't do with The GIMP is paint! Originally it started out as image processing software, and it still is an image processing software foremost.

If you want a free drawing/painting software, contemplate using InkScape, being a vector graphics program, it similar to the old Corel Draw or similar programs.

p.s.: If you want to draw figures and illustrations foremost, use the Draw component of OpenOffice, the free Office suite.

I edited images with Gimp for a year or two, then Photoshop for a year or two, then stopped for a couple years. Now I have Gimp installed but barely use it.

Gimp is pretty nice, but I think you can do a little more with Photoshop. Some things are easier with Photoshop. Also, the image quality is somewhat better with Photoshop.

Yeah, photoshop has a few extra things. Though the new photoshop can do 3D work, which GIMP I don't think can.... ?

No 3D yet, but it can do animations now.
