is that some of it's software upgrades could leave you without a working skin and mods. do you guys agree with this and do you got anything you hate about IPB?

Yea I hate that two.. but in xenforo, its different, the skin and mods will work regardless, all you got to do is revert the templates and everything will be fine.

I don't have an opinion on the matter. As I don't have IPB but I can understand that being frustrating.

That's not a weakness in IPB, that is a matter of life for any forum software.

There's no way to guarantee that modifications/skins will work with every software upgrade...

That never was an issue with me for mods, but it sometimes is annoying doing one or two edits to the theme to fix things up. I have more of a problem with them hardcoding numbers here and there.

Same thing with vbulletin, you can easilly revert the skin but sometimes it can end up with the skin weird :S

IPB is a pain in the ass to upgrade, but mods and skins aren't the reason. Any forum software (any software for that matter) is going to have incompatibility issues with extensions upon upgrade.

Well, depends on what the version is. XenForo hasn't gone through any *major* changes. IPB 3.0 to 3.1 was a pretty big update.

I haven't gone through any major upgrades on my IPB board yet (started with 3.1.2 and now on 3.1.4). And as others have said, there is no way to guarantee that your skin or mod will work 100% with an upgrade, especially if it's a major version such as the upcoming 3.1 -> 3.2. This is a flaw of most forum software. I remember when I first ran on phpBB, that was a nightmare. I had to install the same mod on each skin I had. There is a very simple solution to all this though, patience. It won't work in everyone's case but I only buy skins from providers that upgrade their skins, such as skinbox. All I have to do is wait for them to make their skin compatible with the new version of IPB or any other add-on and it's a no brainer. I also only use modifications that are developed by active members of the IPS commnunity, this way it prevents me from having a headache later down the road. If you have custom modifications or skins, I can certainly see how this is problematic. One thing that has helped me in this is that I'm very social on rival websites and forum communities. I've made good friends with great talent and they are now part of my staff. They make mods for me and update it whenever I update the board free of charge.

Yea it has now, after the Xenforo RC3 the backwards compatibility was removed so existing plugins didnt work then. By the way Xenforo 1.00 is out, the first stable release... adminbb is running it.

I think IP.Board works fine. I do not think there is anything I really hate about it. It could use some improvements like better rep system, but thats about it.

There are many things they should improve on. However, for a first go they have done well. I just hope the lawsuit goes in their favor.

I think you should first go to where ever you got the theme and make sure they've updated. I would never update software without considering the updates of hooks/plugins and my theme.

It's the way of life with forum software, it's not just IPB, it's EVERY software, there's no guarantee that ANY mods will work after an upgrade to a newer version, it's just how things are when running a forum. If you don't want to deal with such hassles, your best bet is to run a free forum like ZetaBoards. :-P
